No. 299, often referred to as the Quintessential Usonian home, offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of architectural heritage. The McCartney house boasts ~1,700ft of living space. Including 4 BRs/2 full BA; a stunning great room w/ walls of glass centered around 4 FLW-designed tables & newly restored original fireplace, a kitchen with quartz countertops & clerestory perforated block windows, along w/ a plethora of other restorations. Constructed of concrete blocks designed by FLW (cast included) & African Mohogany, featuring an abundance of windows intended to allow its inhabitants close contact with nature through everchanging views of wildlife & the seasons. As described by FLW, this "house is an experimental geometric form: a triangle, or several of them almost a star" is built on a 4' parallelogram grid, with each wing in the form of a triangle. Commissioned in 1949 by Ward and Helen McCartney, it was the second Usonian home in Michigan to use the diamond-shaped module. The "shallow hip roof has acute 14-degree angles that make up the roof pitch on 2 of the 3 corners, with one razor-sharp eave that is cantilevered 18 feet from heel-to-toe, almost attempting to touch the adjoining slope."
